British athletes boycott Paris Olympic village as Team

Team GB athletes have boycotted the Olympic village restaurants in Paris amid allegations of meat being undercooked.

Athletes have arrived for this summer's Games over the past week and will stay in one of the three villages situated along the River Seine. The villages are spread across the suburbs of Saint-Denis, Saint Ouen and L'ile-Saint-Denis.

Organisers have claimed they have brought in Michelin chefs to provide top-class food for the athletes. Around 40,000 meals are prepared a day in the village, and the main restaurant has 3,300 seats.

But Sodexo Live, the company in charge of catering, have been struggling under the weight of demand. They have been forced to increase the daily order of several of the most popular items after athletes complained that they have been unable to eat their choice of food.

Team GB athletes have been left particularly angry over the problems in the restaurants, with The Times claiming some have complained of being served uncooked meat. It is also reported that eggs and grilled chicken are being rationed, with lengthy queues to eat.

British bosses have now decided to fly out an extra chef, with Team GB athletes to now eat at their own performance centre. The British Olympic Association have been left furious over the state of the catering.

“At the beginning of every Games there are usually two or three issues and the transportation is always one. But the big one this time is the food in the village, which is not adequate," Andy Anson, the BOA’s chief executive, told The Times.

“There are not enough of certain foods: eggs, chicken, certain carbohydrates, and then there is the quality of the food, with raw meat being served to athletes. They have got to improve it over the next couple of days dramatically. “Our athletes have decided they would rather go and eat in our performance lodge in Clichy, so we are having to get another chef to come over as the demand is far exceeding what we thought it would be. It is the biggest issue at the moment.”
