Azerbaijan to host 2024 Chess Candidates Tournament for chess elite vying for top places
The 2024 Chess Candidates Tournament can be held in Azerbaijan in the future.
Mahir Mammadov, vice-president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), president of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation (ACEF), made a statement at the press conference dedicated to the World Cup to be held in Baku, SIA reports.
"There are plans to hold such competitions. But this is not a decision I can make alone," he added.
The event will feature an unprecedented prize fund of 2.5 million US dollars. For the first time, the top three players from both the Open and the Women's section, which will be held together at the same time, will qualify for the Candidates tournaments.
