Mehriban Aliyeva: We were all friends, were hand in hand and did not anticipate anything
"Literally before our visit to Moscow, a documentary was shown on an Azerbaijani TV channel. The documentary was about an elderly woman, she is 79 years old, and she came to Aghdam, to the liberated Aghdam, to find her home. The woman is really very old, she could hardly walk, and practically for 30 minutes, through tears, she tried to talk about her emotions, that she, of course, did not find anything. She did not even find the ruins of her house. That is, she tried to find at least the area. This is an absolutely terrible sight, and I think that now is an opportunity - I want to invite you all," First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva said at a meeting with Russian media captains at TASS news agency, as quoted by SİA.
"Because Mr. President also spoke about the book. But you need to see it with your own eyes. But why I am talking about it now - she told her story and at the same time, there were video clips, pre-war clips, before the first war, when her family had a wedding - how they celebrated this wedding in the yard, welcoming a young bride, and current shots, today's shots. She had tears of pain, tears of happiness that she still came to this land. She said: `I survived. I am happy that I survived.’ In the end, she takes a piece of land and kisses.
“That is, I am telling this now in order to - it's hard to convey, you probably have to see, feel that there are many such people. During the years of the first war, we had about a million refugees. People, who had a dream, many did not live to see, those who lived out, of course, are happy now. And, of course, these people have families, have acquaintances. And when such situations occur, this is really, as the President emphasized, first of all, in order to protect.
“Because we often, when talking about some big problems, we speak in general terms, and we do not see - this, perhaps, naturally – of an individual person. Behind every problem, probably, there is still a person – his story, his life, his emotions - and, unfortunately, people are different and the emotional background of people is different.
“And that is why, as a state, in this case, the President speaks on behalf of the state of Azerbaijan, it [the state] must protect everyone who visits Azerbaijan. But it [the state] also knows what emotions people go through. I studied at school, I had an absolutely multinational class - Armenians, Russians, Jews, Azerbaijanis.
“Even I cannot say that the Azerbaijanis in my class were in majority –if you remember, there were 45 pupils in a class. We were all friends, we were united, and absolutely nothing anticipated. I think that this feature is one of the best features of the Azerbaijani people, and it could not disappear. The way it is so today is absolutely understandable, and unfortunately, there are historical roots for this to happen," Mehriban Aliyeva said.
