EU’s biased statements seen as interference in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs

The European Union's biased and unfair statements are being viewed as interference in Azerbaijan's internal affairs, said Spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aykhan Hajizada in response to the EU’s comments on September 11, which referenced a public statement made by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, SİA reports.

“We find it unacceptable that the EU once again makes biased statements based on this public statement, and we strongly reject this smear campaign.

Instead of issuing baseless statements about Azerbaijan, we recommend the EU focus on addressing human rights violations within its own member states.

We emphasize that the deaths of protesters during the 'yellow vest' protests in France, the torture of local populations in overseas territories due to France’s neocolonial policies, widespread bribery and corruption within EU institutions, as well as rising Islamophobia and attacks on Muslims, remain unaddressed. The EU has not provided adequate responses to these issues.

We also regret that the EU applies double standards, showing indifference to human rights violations in Armenia, including the deaths of individuals detained due to political persecution, and the targeting of politicians and their families.

Given this context, the EU's biased and unfair statements are seen as interference in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs. In particular, this defamatory campaign against Azerbaijan on the eve of COP29 is a clear example of prejudice toward our country.

In Azerbaijan, the rights of all citizens are protected, and the welfare of individuals deprived of liberty is ensured in accordance with international standards. The EU’s claims are entirely baseless,” Hajizade stated.
