Azerbaijan puts forward landmine problem as Sustainable Development Goal 18

Azerbaijan put forward the landmine problem as the 18th Sustainable Development Goal, Ali Ahmadov, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the National Coordinating Council for Sustainable Development, said at the 4th Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Dialogue themed “Consultations with interested parties on the 4th Voluntary National Report of Azerbaijan, expansion of women's economic rights and opportunities, and progress on the 5th SDG," Report informs.

According to him, more than one million anti-personnel mines were buried in the liberated areas: “According to statistics of the World Health Organization, 15 million people have died as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Of course, this is a great tragedy, but if we consider the number of mines buried in Azerbaijan, we will see that the gap is very huge.”

The Deputy Prime Minister said that although the war is over, Azerbaijan's landmine problem continues: “Even after the war, people are killed or injured as a result of mine explosions in Azerbaijan. I believe that the issues raised by Azerbaijan regarding the mine problem will be accepted by the UN. The civil world will not turn a blind eye to this problem, and the mine problem will be one of the main topics on the agenda. Azerbaijan put forward the landmine problem as the 18th Sustainable Development Goal of the UN. One-third of the world suffers from landmine problems, and I think they will support Azerbaijan in this matter.”
