Three killed, hundreds injured in riots in French New Caledonia

Security forces arrested 140 people during unrest on Tuesday night in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, a representative of the New Caledonia president said.

SİA informs via Reuters that, according to him, three people died as a result of the unrest. French High Commissioner Louis Le Frank earlier said one person was killed by gunfire and two others were injured. The rioter was shot not by the police.

The High Commissioner said there were exchanges of fire between rioters and civil defense forces. There was an attempt to storm the gendarme station.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said hundreds of people were injured, including about 100 police officers and gendarmes. Dozens of homes and commercial buildings were burned.

In response to violent protests in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, the French authorities imposed a curfew and banned public events.
