Potential of Agroparks in increasing wheat production

Development of agriculture is one of the priorities of economic policy. In the era of current global challenges, the importance of this field has increased even more. In order to develop the agricultural sector, various support measures are implemented by the state.

The infrastructure, irrigation and irrigation systems created in our country, financial support to the agricultural sector, tax, as well as concessions applied in connection with the provision of equipment and fertilizers, providing subsidies to grain farming, create favorable opportunities for the development of this field. From this point of view, agroparks are an efficient mechanism.

Agroparks increase the volume of production of the main strategic products of the country due to the wide application of innovative methods such as rotation and repeated plantings, the use of high-reproduction and high-quality seeds, proper agrotechnical care and other areas.

Currently, the Economic Zones Development Agency (EZIA) under the Ministry of Economy manages 51 agricultural parks operating in the country. Grain is planted in 40 of these agroparks and high productivity is achieved.

During 2022, wheat was harvested on 41 thousand hectares of agroparks and more than 152 thousand tons of crops were produced. Of this, 88,800 tons are for food, 31,400 tons for seeds, and 32,000 tons for fodder wheat. The average productivity of wheat production in agroparks was 3.7 tons/ha, which is higher than the national average (the national average is 3.2 tons/ha). The average productivity in the 21.7 thousand hectare pivot areas of the agroparks was 4.5 tons/ha. In several agricultural parks, the average yield for wheat and barley is 6-7 tons/ha (3.2 tons/ha for the country), 12-15 tons/ha for corn (6 tons/ha for the country), and 80 tons/ha for sugar beet. ha (43 tons/ha across the country).

Within the framework of the new support measures arising from the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On a number of measures to increase the level of self-sufficiency with food wheat", it is planned to increase wheat planting in the pivot areas of agroparks by 52 percent or 11.3 thousand hectares to 33 thousand hectares in current year's duration.

In the next 5 years, it is predicted that the areas under the pivot will reach 100 thousand hectares, and the production of food wheat in the agricultural parks will be increased to 143 thousand tons in 2023.

This is an important contribution to the grain supply of the country and strengthening food security.
