European companies lead digital overhaul of Middle Corridor

French Expertise France and German GIZ are actively contributing to the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor, TMTM), with a special focus on digitizing logistics and reducing cargo transit times.

Both companies support the development of the route as part of the European Union's Global Gateway initiative.

As noted by the Director of Expertise France, Jérémie Pelle, the work is being carried out in two main directions: financing infrastructure and ensuring effective communications for cargo transit.

"Expertise France and GIZ are focused on the intangible aspects of the project, including digital solutions and logistics optimization," the company said in a statement.

The development of the Middle Corridor was also discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan, Ilkhom Makhkamov, and European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Jozsef Síkela. The main focus was on increasing trade volumes between Central Asia and Europe, as well as the implementation of infrastructure projects under the Global Gateway initiative.

The participation of European companies in the digitalization of logistics and optimization of transit processes is expected to significantly boost trade efficiency, as noted by Expertise France. EU investments in infrastructure and digital technologies will help reduce cargo transport time and increase trade volumes.

The Middle Corridor connects China, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Europe. In 2023, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan signed an agreement to establish the joint railway company Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd. to enhance the efficiency of transit transportation.

Cargo transportation along the TMTM increased by 62% in 2024, reaching 4.5 million tons. In 2025, the expected cargo volume is 5.2 million tons, with 4.2 million tons passing through the member countries of TMTM. This volume will include 2.5 million tons of dry cargo (96,000 TEU) and 1.7 million tons of oil. By 2027, the route's capacity may reach 10 million tons.
