Lavrov: Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran trilateral format has a future

The trilateral format Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran has a good future, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the thematic conference “Russian-Azerbaijani relations in the 21st century: strategic partnership in the context of regional security” within the third meeting of the Russian-Azerbaijani expert council.

The Russian foreign minister noted that Moscow is ready to contribute to the resumption of this format:

“Before the COVID period, the Russia-Azerbaijan-Iran trilateral format functioned successfully, we think that it also has a good future. Now we are interested in our Iranian colleagues taking the necessary measures to overcome the consequences of the bloody attack on the diplomatic mission of Azerbaijan. We will try to help resolve this issue.”

Speaking about another regional cooperation platform in the 3+3 format, Lavrov noted that preparations are underway for the second meeting.

“The 3+3 platform was formed on the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, who was supported by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and then by Russian President Vladimir Putin. So far, only one meeting has been held under this mechanism, the Georgian neighbors have refrained from participating. But we agreed that we will always keep the door open for Tbilisi. This fully remains relevant in the context of preparations for the second meeting at this stage,” the Russian foreign minister said.
