Man arrested 31 years after police shooting

British police on Thursday arrested a man on suspicion of conspiring to murder a police officer who was killed while on duty outside theLibyan Embassy in London 31 years ago.

Police officer Yvonne Fletcher, 25, was shot from inside the embassy as gunfire erupted during a protest against the country's leader Moammar Gadhafi in April 1984. Ten Libyan protesters against Gadhafi were shot and injured. A counter demonstration in support of Gadhafi was being held nearby at the time, which police believe was organized by people at the embassy.

An 11-day siege at the embassy, in central London, followed the shooting and Britain cut diplomatic ties with Libya over the incident. Thirty diplomats and staff members were deported. Nobody has been prosecuted.

"We believe that the incident was part of the so-called 'stray dogs campaign' being orchestrated from Libya to attack overseas dissidents and their interests during that time," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

It said a Libyan man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder Fletcher, and money laundering.
