Divided Korean families await reunions

Almost 400 South Koreans armed with cold medicine, winter coats and U.S. dollars will cross the world’s most heavily fortified border Tuesday for an event most never dared hope would happen: a meeting with their North Korean relatives.

Following an agreement reached in August after a stand-off that had the North threatening war, hundreds of Koreans separated during the 1950-53 war will be reunited, albeit briefly, at a mountain resort.

It’s part of rare, cross-border contacts begun decades ago and now perhaps a last chance for many as the war-era generation reaches their 80s or older.
