U.S. and Russian militaries will start holding meetings soon to avoid running into each other in Syria, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday.
"We agreed on the imperative of as soon as possible -- perhaps even as soon as tomorrow, but as soon as possible -- having a military-to-military de-confliction discussion," Kerry told a joint press conference with Lavrov following a meeting at the United Nations.
The meeting came hours after Russia began carrying out airstrikes in western Syria. Moscow, a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, says the strikes had targeted Daesh munitions depots, vehicles and communications centers.
Kerry reiterated the U.S.' fears that the true targets of the raid were non-Daesh opposition groups.
