British Gas owner Centrica is to cut 6,000 jobs - despite reporting a doubling in profits from its household energy customers.
About 5,000 of the job cuts will be in the UK, with half of the total to be made through redundancies before the end of 2017, Centrica said.
The announcement came as Britain's biggest energy supplier reported it made £528m in the first half of 2015 - more than in the whole of 2014 - despite cutting prices by 5pc in January.
A combination of colder weather, which saw customers use 8pc more gas for heating, and significant falls in wholesale costs, contibuted to the profit rise.
