The US and Cuba will today announce the re-opening of their embassies for the first time in more than 50 years as part of a historic détente between the Cold War foes.
The two nations broke off diplomatic ties in 1961 after Fidel Castro seized power but agreed late last year to a thawing in relations after months of secret negotiations.
President Barack Obama is expected to announce that a Cuban embassy will open its doors just a few miles from the White House and that the communist island's flag will be allowed to fly in the American capital.
