Gorbachev gets Kiel World Economy Prize 2015

Former President of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, has become a winner of a German prize for contribution to world economy.

He was nominated for the Kiel World Economy Prize 2015 in the Policy category. The awarding ceremony will be held during the Kiel Global Economy Week on June 21.

"It’s hard to imagine someone who had a bigger impact on the political landscape of the world," the president of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), Dennis Snower said in connection with the decision to award the prize to Gorbachev, who is now 83.

"Mikhail Gorbachev has changed the political landscape of Europe and the World crucial for the better," he said. "Without him, we would not be this year marking the 25th anniversary of German reunification."

Apart from the former Soviet President, the prizes for 2015 have been awarded to Jeffrey Immelt, the CEO of General Electric, Kristine and Douglas Tompkins who are executives in the textile industry, and British economist Christopher A. Pissarides who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2010.
