Off-Duty cop finds $120,000 dumped on road

An off-duty policewoman has been praised for her honesty after she handed in bank deposit bags containing $120,000 (£74,000), which she found lying on a deserted street.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer was driving home in a personal car when she swerved to avoid what looked like rubbish in the middle of a road in Concord.

The sergeant made a U-turn and went to investigate the two bags, which had tyre marks on them. It turned out to be a man's life savings.

The officer, who asked not to be identified, said that "it didn't feel real" when she opened up the bag last month and saw all the $100 bills.

But the 20-year CHP veteran said she did not hesitate to hand the money in, and used the incident to teach her children about honesty.

"There was no one on that street after I had come back, nobody would have known," she told WTVD TV.

"But that's what determines a person's integrity: it's what you do when nobody is looking."

Police were able to return the small fortune to its rightful owner. It is not clear how the money came to be misplaced.

CHP Division Chief Avery Browne told the San Francisco Chronicle: "On too many occasions our personnel do not pause to be recognized as they feel they were simply doing their job."
