At least 12 people killed after 2 trains collide in India

Two express trains have collided in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens.

Railway official Madhuresh Kumar says three coaches of a train derailed and toppled over after another train crashed into it in Gorakhpur city station late Tuesday.

Kumar said Wednesday that 12 bodies were pulled out of the coaches. Forty-five people were hospitalized with injuries.

Officials said railway services across northern India have been affected, with several trains diverted to alternate routes.

Accidents are common on India's railroad network, one of the world's largest, with 23 million people riding daily on about 11,000 passenger trains. Most accidents are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
