Johannesburg Zoo’s last remaining polar bear has died at the age of 28, quite literally of a broken heart.
Wang, believed to be the only polar bear left in Africa, died on Wednesday – around six months after the death of GeeBee, his partner of 27 years. The official statement from the zoo said Wang was put down due to complications from ‘liver and heart failure’.
But he had been noticeably in mourning since the death of GeeBee from a heart attack in January. He appeared listless, shunned food and did not want to go swimming – a pastime he enjoyed with GeeBee.
