Forty people were injured, four of them seriously, in a collision between a high-speed TGV and a regional train near the southwest French city of Pau on Thursday, authorities said.
French authorities say that the two trains were carrying a total of 238 passengers at the time of the collision. The local Pyrenées-Atlantiques prefectural spokesman Patrice Abbadie said that no fatalities are expected.
The collision occurred in Denguin, a small city near Pau, when a national TGV train bound for Paris collided head-on with a regional train during the busy evening commute, said Abbadie. It was not immediately clear what caused the collision.
Emergency services including ambulances, helicopters and fire engines were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the seriously injured were taken to hospital
