U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is meeting Monday with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif as a deadline looms for a long-term agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
A senior State Department official said the purpose of the meeting in Vienna is "to see if progress can be made," and that Kerry wanted to have an in-depth discussion to gauge how willing Iran is to "make the critical choices it needs to make."
Kerry said Sunday before talks between diplomats from Iran and a group of six world powers that "significant gaps" remained before a deal could be reached.
Zarif called for both sides to negotiate in good faith.
Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany have been negotiating for months trying to agree on a comprehensive deal to ensure Iran's nuclear program is peaceful. In return, Iran wants the repeal of international sanctions that have hurt the country's economy.
