German Parliament approves dual citizenship draft law

The German Parliament approved a new draft law late Thursday night allowing children of immigrants born in Germany to be eligible to apply for dual citizenship.

The dual citizenship draft will allow young people who are born in Germany and have lived there for at least eight years or attended school for six years until their 21st birthday to be eligible for dual citizenship.

In the Federal Parliament in Berlin, 463 members of parliament voted for and 111 voted against the new draft law.

Under the current system, children of immigrants have to decide whether to give up their original nationality in order to obtain German citizenship until their 23rd birthday.
