Kerry to meet Kurdish leaders on ISIL revolt

U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry will meet Massoud Barzani, the President of the Kurdish Regional Government to discuss the latest situation in Iraq following the advance of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in Iraq's north.

Kerry arrived at Erbil International Airport on Tuesday morning and was received by Kurdish officials of the regional government.

The Secretary of State will also meet with the prime minister of the Kurdish government, Nechirvan Barzani and representatives of several Kurdish political parties in Erbil.

Kerry arrived Monday in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad for talks and to urge Iraq's Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, to form a more inclusive government as the Sunni militant insurgency continues to expand control over more territory across the country.

The Italian Foreign Minister, Federica Mogherini phoned Massoud Barzani and discussed recent developments in Iraq in the last two weeks.

In his remarks, the president Barzani signalled for a referendum in his government if the crisis continues unresolved.

"There was a joint military power between Kurdish and Iraq governments beforehand, but there is no presence of an Iraqi army," Barzani revealed, putting the blame on the current situation on Baghdad officials' for their mistreatment and sectarian approach.

Massoud Barzani said his government would consider a referendum if the political anarchy is not resolved.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militants, backed by tribal fighters, seized Iraq's second-largest city Mosul on June 10 and have captured a number of other towns in the north including Tikrit and Tal Afar. They also hold control of Al Qaim, Rawah, Anah, Ratba and Haditha in the western province of Anbar.
