Suria presidential elections

Surians headed to polls on Tuesday to vote in a controversial presidential election. Polls have opened and voting is in Syria’s government-held areas amid heavy security, in an election President Bashar al-Assad is widely expected to win but which has been denounced by critics and the West.

Polling stations opened at 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT) and will close at 19:00. Three candidates are vying for the presidency in the war-torn country.

Around 15 million eligible voters are casting their ballots in more than 9,600 polling stations which have been set up in government-held areas.

Syrian expats living in Jordan, Oman, Sudan, Yemen and Lebanon have already voted in the election, turning out in big numbers.
