Elections not for a year in Thailand

Thailand’s army chief said on Friday there would be no general election in the country for at least a year SIA reports quoting the Euronews.

General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who led the ousting of the government last week, said there would first need to be a "process of reconciliation" between the different political factions as well as reform which would take around a year.

"A legislative council will be established in order to select a prime minister, appoint a cabinet to oversee the administration and draft a (new) constitution, as well as set up a reform council to reform all issues that the society desires, acceptable to all groups," Chan-ocha said.

In a message to demonstrators angry at the military coup, he warned that there would be no return to democracy if there are still protests "without a true understanding of democracy".

More than 250 people, including members of the ousted government, journalists and academics have been arrested in the last week. Around 70 are still in custody.
