A US military satellite has identified "imminent signs" of a new nuclear test at North Korea's Punggye-ri proving grounds, according to a senior Pentagon official.
SIA reports quoting CNN satellite imagery shows that tarpaulins have been rigged over the entrance to a tunnel. The North Korean military used a similar tactic ahead of the nation's third nuclear test, in February 2013, in order to conceal the nuclear device as it was delivered to the site.
The final indication that all the elements are in place for a test would be earth-moving equipment being employed to fill the tunnel entrance.
Pyongyang warned in March that it would carry out a "new type" of nuclear test, which analysts believe will be the regime's first plutonium-based device, and continues to defy international pressure to cancel the test.
North Korean state media describe the nation's nuclear weapons programme as a "treasured sword" to fend of the hostility of the US.
