US should employ foreign skilled workers: Expert

The United States has to employ skilled workers from overseas as American university graduates are not qualified, professor Paul Sheldon Foote said.

"Large numbers of universities are not running rigorous programs anymore, they’re simply permitting students to take large numbers of courses and work full time and giving them passing grades," Foote told Press TV on Sunday.

"And then these students discover that they cannot find jobs and that means that the United States has to bring in large numbers of highly-skilled workers from around the world," he said.

A new report shows 45 percent of American teenagers were employed in 2000, but by 2011, that ratio plummeted to 26 percent.

Foote said that "unemployment has become a very big and growing problem in the United States."

He said many university graduates cannot land a job in part because people do not retire when they should, thanks to the economic problems.

"We have more and more students and people unable to find jobs. And at the other end, we have people who should retire by now because of the economic problems, because of the government driving savings, driving interest rate down to nearly zero," he said. "Many people continue to work and will continue to work and not retire, which means those positions will" not be available for other people, he added.

"There really is nothing positive in the future prognosis for employment," Foote said, noting that "we need to make very drastic changes in the economy, we need to stop the endless wars we need to stop the huge amount of government spending, the giant entitlement programs."

The US unemployment rate for February ticked up to 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent in January.
