In the summer of 2013, the highest court of Switzerland rejected a request from a Muslim girl to be excused from swimming lessons because the teacher was male, stating integration was more important than religion.
Furthermore, the fact that the girl already knew how to swim was ignored.
A similar action was taken in Germany where Federal Administrative Court of Germany has ruled that Muslim girls must take part in co-educational swimming classes in their schools.
The federal appeals court in Leipzig made the ruling after a Moroccan-born 13-year-old girl named Asmae sought exemption from taking part in co-educational swimming lessons, arguing that they ran contrary to Islamic principles of modesty.
Also in Germany a court of law endorsed the ban of Muslim prayer in a high school despite the German constitution guaranteeing religious freedom.
In the UK, a 14 year old Muslim boy in Lancashire was excluded from school for refusing to shave his beard due to religious reasons.
According to a report published in 2007 by the Muslim Council of Britain, some education institutions "have not been receptive of legitimate and reasonable requests made by Muslim parents and pupils in relation to their faith based aspirations and concerns.
This week on Islam and Life we ask: Is there a conflict between religious freedom and integration within schools?
