A Greek couple have been arrested on suspicion of buying a Roma baby from the child's mother for 4,000 euros, Greek police said Friday.
The suspects, aged 53 and 48, are accused of buying the child in March, and were arrested on Wednesday, police said in a statement. They were due to appear in court to face charges on Friday.
The couple are alleged to have wanted the baby because they had no children of their own, police said.
The news came after days of international media attention on a separate case involving Roma -- a people descended from Indian nomads and who face widespread discrimination in Europe -- and a child.
In that case, Greek authorities seized a blond, blue-eyed girl, known as "Maria," from a Roma couple last month, suspecting that she wasn't theirs. Authorities initially asked questions about Maria because she her features didn't appear similar to the couple, who have darker complexions typical of Roma.
Medical tests showed she wasn't their daughter, authorities have said. Their lawyers say the couple took Maria, believed to be 5 or 6 years old, into their home after her biological mother, who they say was from Bulgaria, was unable to look after her.
Greek authorities charged the Roma couple who had Maria until last week -- Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40, and Christos Salis, 39 -- with abducting the child. They appeared in court Monday and were both remanded into custody pending trial.
