For the first time the holiday was celebrated 21 years ago at the initiative of the British Left-Handers Club. Today, it is celebrated by nearly 500 million people around the world.
Vlada Karnitskaya: Every 12th person in Belarus is a left-hander. In total, at least 500 million people are celebrating their holiday today. Among them are Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Milla Jovovich, Julia Roberts, Mickey Rourke and even a cartoon character Bart Simpson. Our compatriot Marc Chagall, by the way, was also left-handed.
Psychologists say that the forced re-training of a left-handed child causes psychological stress, which can lead to serious nervous diseases. This provokes violation of both psychical and language development and generally impedes academic progress.
The concept of left- and right-handedness applies not only to humans, but also to the animal world. There are almost 30% of left-handers among mice; for cats it is more convenient to use the right paw and all polar bears are definitely left-handed.
