Syria opposition prime minister resigns

Syria's rebel prime minister Ghassan Hitto announced his resignation on Monday, after failing to set up a government for the opposition four months after he was appointed, dpa reported.

"I announce I will not continue in my capacity as prime minister tasked with leading the interim government," Hitto was quoted as saying in a statement.

Hitto, who is backed by Qatar, resigned two days after the Syrian opposition elected little-known tribal leader, Ahmed Aasi al-Jarba, to head the Syrian National Coalition. Al-Jarba is close to Saudi Arabia.

Hitto's resignation and al-Jarba's election are further indication that Qatar - which has dominated the bloc and backed members of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood - is losing ground inside the coalition, created last year to unify the opposition.

The bloc has been divided from the beginning, mainly over proposals to negotiate an end to the 27-month conflict with the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

More than 93,000 people have been killed in Syria since the anti-government revolt started in March 2011, according to the United Nations.

In New York, Syrian UN ambassador Bashar Jaafari said his government plans to invite Swedish expert Ake Sellstrom to Damascus to discuss allegations of chemical weapons use in the conflict.

Jaafari said Sellstrom, head of a UN team investigating allegations of chemical weapons use, will be able to discuss conditions for the team to perform its work in Syria.

"We have decided to invite Mr Ake Sellstrom to further negotiate the terms of reference in Damascus," said Jaafari.

Damascus, which called for an investigation after accusing armed opposition groups with using chemical weapons, had not allowed Sellstrom and his team to enter the country since it was set up in May.

Britain, France and the United States have accused Syrian government forces of using chemical weapons against the rebels.
