Kerry's latest push for Mideast peace talks yields little

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday conceded there were "a few things" left to be ironed out to in the bid to see Palestinians and Israelis return to the negotiating table, dpa reported.

"There have been positive and very important discussions over the last few days... There are a few things we need to work on," he said.

Kerry has spent the last four days shuttling between Jerusalem, Amman and Ramallah to secure a relaunch of the talks that stalled nearly three years ago.

"I believe that with a little more work, the start of final-status negotiations could be within reach. We started out with very wide gaps, and we have narrowed those considerably," he told reporters before departing via Ben-Gurion International Airport.

His senior aides would remain in the region to continue the contacts. Palestinian officials said Kerry may return in about two weeks for what would be a sixth visit since his appointment in February.

Kerry had held three meetings each with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The visit was extended by a day and one meeting with Netanyahu spilled over to 3 am Sunday.
