Employees of government agencies detained in Georgia on torture charges

Nine persons were detained in Georgia on charges of torture, among them there is an employee of the Georgian Ministry of Defense and two policemen, the Georgian Interior Minister Irakli Garibashvili told reporters on Wednesday.

According to him, these persons were detained after video materials found in hiding places in Samegrelo were studied.

As the minister said, among the detainees, there is a man who committed sexual abuse against prisoners.

"By this, we have answered all of yesterday's accusations according to which, the arms that were found in Samegrelo were registered," Garibashvili said.

The Defense Minister said that the arms belong neither to them nor to the Interior Ministry. Only registered arms are kept in the ministry, and the arms found in the hiding places were unregistered, plus drugs and other materials, Garibashvili added.

According to him, the arms that were stored in hiding places would have been enough for two platoons and there are horrifying sequences on the videotapes that were found in barrels.

Garibashvili said that, people were tortured in order to get confessional testimonies.

"It turned out that one of these people was not brought to trial. He was simply tortured because they could not get the desired statement. The second tortured person was convicted on a completely different charge - for possession and use of drugs," Garibashvili said.

The minister believes that everything that happened is a systemic problem that has been a part of the policy of previous governments, so the public needs to know who was behind it all.

Garibashvili noted that questions about the responsibility of all officials under which these "horrors" happened should be raised.
