US soldier sentenced to life for Iraq shooting deaths of colleagues

A US Army sergeant convicted of fatally shooting five fellow soldiers in Iraq was sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to media reports Friday, dpa reported.

Sergeant John Russell, 48, was found guilty earlier this week by an Army judge of premeditated murder during a shooting spree in a hospital for traumatized soldiers near Baghdad in May 2009.

The life sentence was decided at the Lewis-McChord military base in Washington, according to the Seattle Times.

Russell had faced the death penalty, but the sentence was capped at life after he pleaded guilty to killing the five soldiers, the Times reported.
