Five killed when rebels attack government checkpoint in Yemen

Three soldiers and two insurgents were killed Saturday in a gunbattle in south-eastern Yemen that began when gunmen attacked a security checkpoint, a security official said, DPA reported.

Six soldiers were injured in the fighting in Rada'a, 150 kilometres south-east of the capital, Sana'a, the unnamed official told the government-run website September 6.

President Abdu Rabo Mansour Hadi, who took office more than a year ago, has vowed to fight al-Qaeda until the group is uprooted from the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country.

In mid-2012, the army, backed by US drones, launched a high-profile campaign against militants with suspected links to al-Qaeda.
