Obama to return 5% of salary

President Barack Obama will return 5% of his $400,000 salary to the Treasury to show solidarity with federal workers due to be furloughed thanks to the automatic budget cuts known as the sequester, SIA reports citing the New York Times.

"The president has decided that to share in the sacrifice being made by public servants across the federal government that are affected by the sequester, he will contribute a portion of his salary back to the Treasury," an administration official told the Times.

Obama’s decision would be retroactive to March 1 and apply through the rest of the calendar year, the official told the Times. Other news organizations reported Obama’s decision later.

The $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts dubbed the sequester began taking effect on March 1. The White House arrived at the 5% figure to approximate the level of cuts to non-defense agencies that began on March 1, the Times said.

Earlier this week, the White House said that nearly all of the 500 employees at its budget office would be forced to take furlough days due to the sequester.

Obama’s move follows a similar decision by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.
