Turkish Military Command Tender retirement letters

Turkey's Army Chief General Işık Koşaner, and entire military command reportedly submitted their retirement applications to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Friday. Commander of Groud Forces General Erdal Ceylanoğlu, Commander of Naval Forces Admiral Eşref Uğur Yiğit and Commander of Air Forces General Hasan Aksay have tendered their retirement letters to the Prime Minister's Office.

Chief of Gendarmerie General Command Necdet Özel has arrived in the Prime Minister's Office in the wake of the retirement letters of the Turkish generals. Interior Minister Beşir Atalay is also at the Prime Minister's Office.

The news has come as a shock ahead of a critical Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) meeting on Monday, 1 August.

YAŞ meeting will take place with a background of discussions whether the military staff would ask for the promotion of a number of generals and admirals, who are currently under a criminal probe into their alleged involvement in a suspected coup plot.

Promotions within the Turkish military must be approved by the Turkish President in order to take effect.
