It was an even match that ultimately ended in a draw. Lyon was well organized for most of the match but couldn’t keep a clean sheet. Madrid were much sharper in the attack and would score with a second half substitute. Karim Benzema, who was on the bench because Adebayor got the start, came on in the second half and immediately made an impact.
After a great individual play from Mesut Ozil to keep possession in the final third, he passed to Cristiano Ronaldo who then sent a through ball for Benzema. The former Lyon player would dribble in the box and then beat the goalkeeper with a low shot.
Lyon would reply in the 83rd minute as Real Madrid’s defense were caught sleeping. Bafetimbi Gomis would score off a set piece and energize the home crowd. The pace of the match picked up considerably after the goal and Lyon showed the confidence to get a second goal.
