Romania's Simona Pop, a bronze medallist at the recent European championships, made a surprise early exit from the women's individual epee Fencing competition at the European Games, admitting that she failed to "wake up" in the morning qualifying.
Pop, 26, won just two of her six round-robin pool games and failed to qualify for the knockout stage, finishing equal sixth at the bottom of her group.
"It was all my own fault. It was pretty stupid of me to go out so early, " she said. "I just didn't wake up."
The competition continues on Tuesday.
