Yana Kudryavtseva overwhelms field for all-around gold

lthough Yana Kudryavtseva admitted she was nervous at the start, the Russian quickly dispatched her worries - and, ultimately, her rivals - to win gold in the Rhythmic Gymnastics individual all-around final at the National Gymnastics Arena on Friday.

"My main competitor is me," she said after dominating the final with a winning total of 76.100 points. "First I need to overcome myself, then I can overcome other competitors."

Kudryavtseva neatly accomplished both tasks, leaving silver to compatriot Margarita Mamun with 75.650 points and bronze to Melitina Staiouta of Belarus with 73.100 points.

The 17-year-old winner earned the highest scores of the field in three of the four apparatus, demonstrating dramatic musicality and superb apparatus handling ability.

Mamun's performance revealed no glaring errors, but she good-naturedly alluded to flaws in her routines that kept her from scoring higher.

"I had a couple of mistakes but I hope the audience and judges did not see them," Mamun said. "My mission was to complete my routines successfully. I rate my performance as seven out of 10."

From qualifications, the top six gymnasts on each apparatus -- maximum of one gymnast per NOC -- advanced to the respective apparatus finals on Sunday.
