Baku 2015 Games Academy graduates move into Games-time roles

Graduates from the Baku 2015 Games Academy will this week complete their Graduate Excellence Programme training and move into specific roles at the Games venues and operating centres.

A total of 188 graduates – 163 from Azerbaijan and 25 from countries across Europe – have taken part in the innovative programme, which has supported the development of university graduates into full-time members of the Baku 2015 European Games Operations Committee (BEGOC).

Graduates of the programme, which is part of the BP-supported Games Academy, have benefited from up to one year’s classroom and on-the-job learning of core professional skills and Games knowledge.

As well as this, there has been a focus on skills required to take the next steps in their career after the Games; part of Baku 2015’s commitment to building capability and leaving a human legacy in Azerbaijan.

Mr Gavin McAlpine, Director of Operational Capability and Readiness at Baku 2015, who has responsibility for the Games Academy, said: "This is the first time a full graduate programme has been developed by a major multi-sport Games and we are delighted by the contribution which every one of our participants has made.

"The legacy of the Games Academy will mean there are a number of Azerbaijani staff with the expertise to deliver major multi-sport Games, ensuring the country is in a strong position to host future international events.

"I am sure that all of our graduates will continue to do an excellent job during the Games and help to deliver a fantastic event, of which Azerbaijan and the whole of Europe will be proud."

Participants of the programme have been working across 19 departments of BEGOC to help deliver the first European Games, including Communications, HR, Press Operations, and Venue Management.

Ms Aysel Huseynova, Baku 2015 graduate and Venue Coordination Centre Manager at Heydar Aliyev Arena, said: "The programme has enabled myself and fellow Azerbaijani graduates to develop the skills and knowledge required to help deliver an exciting international multi-sport event in our home country.

"I am very proud to be working at one of the fantastic Baku 2015 venues during the Games and I am looking forward to welcoming people from across Europe to Baku this summer."
