Simon Clegg: Azerbaijanis completely integral to the development

Baku-2015 First European Games Operating Committee (BEGOC) Chief Operating Officer, Simon Clegg gave an interview to the SIA.

"Azerbaijanis have been completely integral to the development, project management and construction of this venue. It is one of BEGOC’s key principles to share the skills and experience of international workers amongst the local workforce." highlights Simon Clegg.

Commenting on skills legacy the Baku 2015 chief operating officer, Simon Clegg : "One of main benefits of the Games will be their legacy for human and economic devlopment. 72 per cent of the Baku 2015 Operational committee’s staff (total – 1,576 people) are local and are learning event and business management skills from a core international, specialised workforce through programmes such as the Games Academy. A graduate training programme (the first of its kind) is in place to ensure that key international skills are retained in the country and promote a new, diversified economy. 16,000 volunteers have already registered to showcase a dynamic, modern Azerbaijan." added.

The inaugural European Games will be the first major multi-sport event to take place in Azerbaijan and will be a massive step in developing the culture of sport in the country.

Hosting these Games will increase Baku’s and Azerbaijan’s reputation as trusted hosts of major international events and will leave it well positioned on the sporting map for future bidding opportunities.

As you can see, we have built a world class venues which can be used for future sporting and entertainment events.

"Our focus is on delivering a world-class physical and human legacy for Azerbaijan. In terms of physical legacy, the Games will allow Azerbaijan to continue to develop itself as a centre for world class sport and forms the basis of Baku’s ability to host events such as the Baku European Grand Prix in 2016; the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games and EURO 2020 games. In addition to the 18 venues we have built for the Games we have worked together to construct two motorways; a metro line, put in place over 600KM of fibre-optic cable and are the first event of this scale to fully integrate cloud computing into operations. These are just a few of our combined achievements." commented Simon Clegg.

We have made the Baku 2015 European Games blueprint as affordable as possible by using a lot of existing venue infrastructure and we only have a limited amount of new construction to deliver.

In total, there will be five new venues built for the European Games. The Aquatics Centre, the National Gymnastics Arena, the BMX Velopark and the Baku Shooting Hall will all host their respective sports. In addition, the National Stadium will host Athletics, as well as the spectacular Opening and Closing ceremonies.
