The Portuguese NOC announced that 75 athletes have already qualified for the Baku 2015 European Games in nine sports.
That number could increase to nearly 100 because sports like badminton, judo, karate and taekwondo still have their qualifications open.
"We have strong hopes of achieving important results," Portugal's Chef de Mission Mr. José Garcia said in a statement.
"We see the European Games as the most important multi-sport event of the year and want to be represented by the best Portuguese athletes in each of the sports in which we will compete."
Mr. Garcia said Baku 2015 is especially important because of direct qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in some sports.
"We are aware that 2015 is a very important year regarding Olympic Games qualification. In Baku, we can fight for places in Rio 2016, so we are focused on getting the best results and of course conquering the highest number of medals we can," Mr. Garcia said.
The Chef de Mission also praised the preparation work by the Baku 2015 organisation committee.
"The athletes will find the best they can find in sporting events. Both the venues and the village are top infrastructures, and all the professionals involved are top class, as we can see by the number of people hired from London 2012, more than two hundred," Mr. Garcia said.
The official also announced that the Portuguese NOC will unveil on 18 March an innovative event to promote the European Games both in Portugal and Europe. The NOC did disclose in its statement that the event will include an "innovative transportation" to Baku of the Portuguese flag that will be carried by the flag bearer at the Baku 2015 Opening Ceremony.
