Beshiktash, Fenerbahche banned from European competition by UEFA

Fenerbahche have been banned from European club competition for two seasons and fellow-Turkish side Beshiktash for one, European soccer's governing body UEFA said on Tuesday.

The ruling means Fenerbahche will be barred from next season's Champions League and Beshiktash will miss out on the Europa League. Both bans were connected with match-fixing in domestic games in 2011.

"Fenerbahche are excluded from participating in the next three UEFA club competitions for which they would qualify, including the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League. The ban for the third season is deferred for a probationary period of five years," the UEFA said on its official website.

The İstanbul-based Beshiktash was summoned by the Control and Disciplinary Body of UEFA last week regarding charges first leveled against the club at the end of the 2010-11 season.

"Beshiktash are not eligible to participate in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League," the UEFA said in the same statement.

The UEFA launched an investigation against Beshiktash in early June.

"Proceedings have also been opened against Beshiktash and two club officials in relation to match-fixing activities which are alleged to have taken place during the 2011 Turkish Cup final," read an official statement posted on UEFA's website on June 10.

Beshiktash Chairman Fikret Orman went to Nyon last week to deliver his defense on the behalf of the club.

UEFA disciplinary board hasn't released any decision on former Beshiktash official Serdal Adalı and former coach Tayfur Havutchu yet. Two Beshiktash officials will face suspension for life if convicted.

UEFA investigator Miguel Palacios has also sought bans for Fenerbahche officials Aziz Yıldırım, İlhan Ekshioglu, Şekip Mosturoglu, Ali Yıldırım, Cemil Turan for their role in the match-fixing scandal.

"Furthermore, in relation to the individuals of the clubs involved in the cases of Fenerbahche and Beshiktash, the CDB decided that certain additional information will be collected in order to consider in further detail the different position of each of the individuals concerned," read an official statement posted on UEFA's website late on Tuesday.

The decision came as a shock for Turkish football as two giant clubs will not be able to represent the country in European competition.
