Azerbaijan is a bridge between North and South, East and West- Youth and Sport Minister
Students of Azerbaijani history from Berlin's Humboldt University have met Youth and Sport Minister Azad Rahimov in Baku.
The minister thanked the delegation and their leader, Prof. Eva-Maria Auch, for their visit to Azerbaijan and said he was encouraged by the creation of a chair of Azerbaijani history at a German university, SIA reported.
The professor said that the establishment of the chair in 2010 was a sign of Germany's increasing interest in Azerbaijan.
Azad Rahimov spoke briefly about Azerbaijan's history and its recent economic development.
He noted that the country
was among the fastest developing countries in the world and that young people
constituted 66% of the population.
The minister said that Azerbaijan
had hosted many great sporting events and was continuing the tradition with the
World Boxing Championship currently under way in Baku.
"We have applied to
host the 2020 Olympic Games in Baku
and the Youth Olympic Games in 2018.
In 2010, Azerbaijani sportsmen won more than 650 awards
in different sports," the minister said.
"Azerbaijan
has become a bridge between North and South, East and West, Christianity and
Islam, which makes our country unique," he told the students.
The Humboldt University students are visiting Azerbaijan from 2 to 13 October. The theme of their trip is "Memory and national self-construction in Azerbaijan". They are to visit museums and places of worship in Baku and to travel to Ganja, Shaki, Gabala and Nij.
