Azerbaijan’s Interior Ministry and Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan has made a joint statement on Nardaran incident November 26, SIA reports.
According to the statement, information received by the Ministry of Internal Affairs about the gang planning to violate social and political stability which operated under the guise of religion and planned to destabilize the situation, commit riots and terror attacks in the republic was investigated and made necessary to carry out urgent measures.
The investigation revealed that Taleh Kamil oghlu Baghirov, Elman Seydamir oghlu Aghayev, Zulfugar Sadraddin oghlu Mikayilov and Abulfaz Heydat oghlu Bunyatov established "Muselman birliyi" (Muslim union) movement to forcibly change the constitutional order of the state and create a Sharia religious state. Abovementioned persons collected supporters from Baku and other regions, provided them with various firearms, ammunition, explosives and facilities and organized criminal group.
They hold illegal meetings in Nardaran Settlement of capital and discussed ways to raise population against the power, gave instructions to their supporters and distributed summons. Concrete duties of each member of armed criminal group as well as responsible persons, which were to commit terror acts against authority representatives determined.
During the operation, the police were fired from automatic weapons and met armed resistance, and hand grenades were thrown on them. In response to the continuous firing of the attackers, the special operation group used service weapons, killing 4 members of the gang and leaving several injured.
A large number of automatic weapons, hand grenades, and other weapons were taken from the scene as physical evidence. 14 members of the criminal group and Taleh Bagirov were detained.
Despite the growing number of armed supporters of the group, the police officers courageously performed their professional duties, 2 police officers heroically died.
"The country's law enforcement and intelligence agencies will continue to drastic measures for timely prevention of such incidents and the immediate neutralization of any organized criminal gang or criminal community. " the statement said.
