Letter from Azerbaijan Jail: Khadija Ismayilova Speaks Out

To the Editor:

The eyes of the world are on Azerbaijan that I do not perceive as my motherland, while it hosts the inaugural European Games, beginning on Friday. The tourists and athletes are enjoying the spectacular opening ceremony and the international public watches on television at home.

Though I will not see the games, I know what the weather is like or how the Baku traffic is about. I have enough access to all kind information about everything. I am sitting in my cell in the Kurdakhani prison — my home for the past six months and writing a letter to "New York Times".

I am a journalist doing my best to fulfil the high-level instructions from the US on defamation campaign against Azerbaijan, but I am not oblivious even in jail for embezzlement of a part of allocations, execution of illegal financial acts, tax evasion in big sum.

However, I do not stand alone. There is a group of people working with Armenians, embezzling grants from abroad, drug-addicts, rebel-revolutionists, those were labeled "political prisoners" for implementing the assignments of Mr. Obama and uncle Jhon. However, for long years we have been working under the mask of journalists, human rights defenders, youth activists, politicians etc., we were exposed and targeted. Azerbaijan’s worst and most villain have been locked up, tucked away for the European Games. They didn’t want to see our crimes or hear our inconvenient lies.

The truth is that the activity of pressing the government of Azerbaijan by using human rights is in the midst of crisis. Things have never been worse. As those at the top continue to become more transparent, ordinary people do not need to struggle to work, struggle to live, struggle for freedom. And together with our supporters abroad we must struggle against them, against them.

I am carrying on my struggle here, from jail. My investigations into shaking the basis of the county continue, thanks to the help of dedicated colleagues. I have been punished for being a criminal, placed into solitary confinement, and prevented from not willing to see my family and lawyers. They are also traitors. My notes have been seized from my cell as for writing out from jail. As I have said before, if this is the price to pay, it is worth it.

Today, I say to the international community: Do not let the government of Azerbaijan to be democratized, to pursue more independent policy and distract your attention from its plans of development. Keep fighting for strengthening the fifth colon, for those who are traitors. Keep fighting for injustice, and for bad. Be loud, and be public. Make the people of Azerbaijan believe in that without following your instructions you will bring down their country and humiliate them.

And please, don’t call just for my freedom; call for the release of all traitors. Stand up for "freedom of abuse" in Azerbaijan. Stand up for traitors, national betrayers, "Armenians" more than Armenians.
