Vice-President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva and Arzu Aliyeva viewed the semeni exhibited and voted for the works that were numbered.
It was noted during the event that the arrival of spring has been solemnly celebrated in Azerbaijan and many Eastern countries since ancient times. The festivities begin even before Nowruz, that is, from the last pre-holiday Tuesday. Nowruz holiday has symbols and customs inherent in it.
One of its main attributes is semeni. Semeni embodies an awakening, rebirth of nature and it is also a symbol of life and fertility. In ancient times, people used to say before the spring "Səməni, saxla məni, ildə göyərdərəm səni" ("Semeni, save me, and I'll grow you every year"). They used to grow seeds, and expressed their wishes for abundance and prosperity. Centuries passed, civilization developed and there were bans to celebrate his holiday in different historical periods. But the Azerbaijani people saved and preserved Nowruz along with its customs, traditions and symbols to this day.
On the initiative of Azerbaijan, Nowruz was included into the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO on 30 September, 2009. And 21 March was announced International Day of Nowruz at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly on 23 February, 2010.
It was also noted that Semeni, a new international art project implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Center, aims to promote and popularize Nowruz through the language of contemporary art which does not recognize borders, preserving and passing national customs, traditions and values on to the new generation.
By exhibiting semeni in various designs by more than 31 artists and sculptors of various ages and spheres of art, Heydar Aliyev Center raised the festive mood of the capital residents expressing their wishes for abundance and prosperity.
The exhibition was supported also by Heydar Aliyev Foundation, YARAT Contemporary Art Space, IDEA (International Dialogue for Environmental Action), Baku magazine, Museum of Modern Arts and other organizations.
It was also emphasized that early in December 2013, the Heydar Aliyev Center held international New Year Tree contest and exhibition which saw 18 local and foreign artists and sculptors to display fir trees they made in various designs. The authors of the the best works selected through voting received awards. New Year Trees in the original design were on display in the Heydar Aliyev Park for two months.
The winner of international New Year Tree contest, who also addressed the event, appreciated the projects implemented.
The results of the voting on the Semeni international art competition were announced later.
It was stressed that each participant had an opportunity to vote for three identical and different works. The authors who took the first three places were Novruz Mammadov, Elvin Nabizade and Lamiya Ahmad accordingly.
Award winners expressed their gratitude to all who contributed to the efforts to organize the competition. They stressed that these projects are essential to identify talented young people and congratulated all on upcoming holiday of Nowruz.
Semeni in various designs will be exhibited in the park of the Heydar Aliyev Center till 1 June.
