Today is 'Wind Charshanbe'

Today is ‘Yel Çərşənbəsi’ (meaning Fire Wednesday). According to ancient beliefs, four kinds of wind slept in ‘The Dark River’ spread across the Earth and clean off themselves first, then each begin to appear in different clothes. The colors have mythical meanings; White Wind in white clothes, Black Wind in black clothes, Khazri Wind in blue clothes, and Gilavar Wind in red clothes. Wind Charshanbe is believed to be the whole of these four kinds of wind and travels around the world in a short while, SIA reported.

According to ancient beliefs, wind is either God himself or a power sent down by the sustainer of the World. It caresses the people of worth, but punishes them when angry. However, the Koran clearly states that wind is sent down by Allah and is a kind of manifestation of His mercy and wrath.

Wind, in the thinking of the Azerbaijanis, is considered to be the symbol of guide. ‘Yel Baba’ (meaning Father Wind) helps the upright lost in dense forests to find the way out by giving them a clew, and then telling them to put it down on the ground and roll it. Next, the clew gets opened by Yel Baba’s blow and it leads the lost to their destination.

Our ancestors said, ‘Wind cannot be cursed, because behind it God stands. If you spit at wind, it will return unto you’.

Another fascinating belief is that a young girl, in Yel Baba ritual song, who is at the moment of death turns to wind and asks to deliver her death news to her mother. Perhaps, wind was considered to be a means of communication among particular elements of the world.

On the day of Wind Charshanbe, fires are made, and people prepare milky rice in their homes. Usually, dessert and candy are put on the table. Women especially prepare for Charshanbe; they are supposed to clean household things, clean carpets from dust, leave blankets in open air, sew new clothes for children. On that day, a piece of red cloth is tied around newly grown ‘Səməni’.
