20 years passes since Kalbajar occupation

Over 53 340 were displaced, 511 innocent civilians were killed, 321 were taken captive as a result of the occupation.

Nineteen years have passed since Kalbajar region occupied by Armenian armed forces on April 2, 1993.

Kalbajar, an area of 1,936 square kilometres located between Nagorno-Karabakh and the Republic of Armenia, was occupied after long battles.

A total of 511 innocent civilians were killed, 321 were taken captive or went missing, and 58,000 were displaced. Some 130 settlements in Kalbajar fell under Armenian control, while 97 schools, nine kindergartens, 116 libraries, 43 clubs, 42 cultural centres, nine hospitals and 13,000 private houses were damaged or destroyed. Over 37,850 hectares of forest and natural resources, including gold deposits, have been plundered.

Kalbajar’s economy is thought to have lost over 700 million rubles in 1993 prices as a result of the occupation.

Castles, bridges and Albanian churches, and mosques in Kalbajar and Otaqli are thought to have been damaged or destroyed.

After the occupation of Kalbajar District, the UN Security Council adopted resolution No 822, calling for the withdrawal of all invading forces from Kalbajar and other occupied regions of Azerbaijan. This resolution and three subsequent resolutions remain unfulfilled.

Contrary to UN and OSCE principles, the Armenians have been moving people into Kalbajar since 1999.

Armenian forces still occupy the Azerbaijani territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts, one of which is Kalbajar.
