Speaking about the partnership, it is impossible not to touch the subject of the Russian language in Azerbaijan, head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Ramiz Mehdiyev has said.

Addressing the Azerbaijani-Russian regional dialogue forum in Baku, he said that It is worth noting that during the years of independence the scope of the Russian language in Azerbaijan didn't narrow, but on the contrary, it has retained its position in almost all spheres of public life.

"Today, pupils of more than twenty secondary schools have the opportunity to get a full secondary education in Russian, and in 327 schools, classes are held in Azerbaijani and Russian languages. Practically all state and partly private universities in the country have departments and sectors where more than 16,000 students receive higher education in Russian.

Baku has one of the major centres for training specialists in Russian philology - the Baku Slavic University. Four years ago, a branch of the world famous Moscow State University named after Lomonosov was opened in our capital city and two years ago, the Russian Drama Theatre named after Samad Vurgun celebrated its 90th anniversary.

The representation of major Russian news agencies such as ITAR-TASS, RIA Novosti and Interfax are operating in Azerbaijan. More than 50 newspapers and magazines are published in Russian language, which is several times greater than the statistics of the Soviet period. A significant number of Russian periodicals are realized in the republic, which are very popular among different segments of the population.

All of the above facts indicate the great importance attached by the Azerbaijani government to conservation and development of Russian-speaking environment in the country and strengthening and expanding relations between our peoples."
